- Group classes on hiatus
Hi Everyone,
It’s with much sadness we must announce we are taking a break from Monday night classes till further notice, effective immediately. We have enjoyed teaching you, connecting with you and building friendships with amazing people over the years. Unfortunately classes are not sustainable at present.
When interest picks up we will look to teach classes again. We will continue doing private lessons, weddings and group lessons by appointment in the meantime – contact us to find out when we’re available. Keep an eye on our FB page and website as we’ll post from time to time about social gatherings and dancing.
Our SummerJive competition will also be on hold till further notice. We were the last modern jive competition to be held in Australia in 2020 and were very excited to see it grow year on year however now must restart again when the world is less turbulent.
We will be in touch with those holding 5 class and monthly passes shortly to offer refunds.

Who we are and what we do
Canberra Dance Company / Canberra Modern Jive is an inclusive, social and fun dance community focused on teaching and promoting the Modern Jive dance style. Modern Jive (also known as Ceroc, Le Bop, and Le Step, amongst many others) is a popular partner dance style that can be danced to the latest music, making it an adaptable and fabulously fun style.
Modern Jive is easy to learn as the Canberra Dance Company offers a casual class system – start any lesson and keep attending any class that’s convenient for you (no pre-payment required). Each session is designed so that you learn a couple of new moves that you can take home and practice or even show off with next time you go out dancing!
You don’t need a partner to book either – just turn up on the night!
As a reward for being brave enough to try your first dance class, we will give you your second class free. Just be sure to let the staff know it is your first night.
What else we do
As many of the staff are keen dance competitors, Canberra Modern Jive also help students who are interested in taking their dancing to the next level to focus on competitive dancing and sends contingents to the major dance competitions around Australia.
As well as offering classes that cater to people with no dance experience, we have classes for people who want to continue learning once they can handle themselves on the dance floor.
Canberra Modern Jive also supports the social aspect of dancing, with not only our regular dance parties, but with many students and staff meeting at venues around Canberra and Queanbeyan on Friday and Saturday nights for a few drinks and much dancing and merriment!
History of CDC and CanMJ
This dance studio arose from Ceroc Canberra, which for 15 years was Canberra’s premier Ceroc studio. When its proprietors retired, the ex-teaching-staff combined to form Canberra Dance Company. Their friendliness, combined skill and passion for dance makes Canberra Dance Company a vibrant, social and welcoming dance community for dancers of all levels of experience.
In 2017, CDC rebranded as Canberra Modern Jive, to emphasise our focus on our favourite form of dance.
Canberra Dance Studio is grateful to all the staff and students who supported us in our venture to keep Modern Jive dancing active and growing in the Australian Capital Territory.
